![]() | of Cybister rugosus |
In Japan, they lives in only Nan-sei islands. But it is not easy to get them now. Slightly bigger than Cybister japonicus, slightly smaller than Cybister tripunctatus. And their looks seem intermediate of japonicus and tripunctatus, too.
Their lengths are 27-33mm. Himefuchitori of Japanese name means that they are smaller than Cybister limbatus. The species is living in only Nan-sei islands likewise, but it is one of the diving beetle that is considered most close in the extinction now. I have never seen it.
Anyway, they are quite cute. They elegantly swims. Who needs frost hardening? They has no need of kind of winter all the year round.
Himefuchitori-Gengorou is resting on a driftwood. Swim, Fly, Walk and rest ofcourse.
Cybister rugosus that several years passed since they come to my home. This photo was taken indoors in one November. Others are already almost outside.
This photo was taken in '06,Jan. They are still in good spirits.
This photo was taken in '06,May. And they are more in good spirits. They began copulation at last. My expectation rises much.
Male diving beetle has a sexual organ which divides in three like a fork spear. Middle: Median lobe, Both sides: Lateral lobes.
This is a newborn larva. The length is 27mm and the almost same as Cybister japonicus.
A close-up photo of its head. I think that it is eay to distinguish the species in Cybister genus.
This is the larva which just became 2nd instar. They likes kinds of fishes. Tadpoles too, shrimps soso, maggots not much.
|
This is the 3rd instar larva just before landing. The length is approximately 80mm. MEMO:[ borned 6/19, 2nd instar 6/28, 3rd instar 7/10, landed 7/21, emerged 8/20 ] |
These are each of the 3rd instar larvae heads just before landing. All of them are by indoors breeding. They has characteristic Clypeus( teeth of a saw ) like Cybister limbatus.
This is the pupa in 9/30 which got into the ground in 9/4. Fatty and beautiful. After few days, it will become an imago.

This imago was taken with a cigarette in the upper picture when larva. And also C of larvaes faces lists. This got an imago and creep out of the ground at midnight in 8/20. I say why did I decide so? Because...
This one kept rustle in a tupperware for pupa after creeped out at midnight. I got woken up and checked this open the lid. This was full of vitality and tried flying in a short while.
This hatched in 6/19, became 2nd instar in 6/28, 3rd instar in 7/20, emerged in 8/21, female and 35mm lengths. This creeped out of the ground at 1:00AM. Why I know because...
